What Is RR Sanity System?

RR Sanity System adds a psychological horror mechanic straight out of games like Don't Starve and Amnesia. Your character's mental state is tracked as a sanity meter from 0 to 100. How you play determines whether that meter stays full or slowly empties.

As sanity drops, things get uncomfortable. First come the whispers — text messages in the dark. Then slowness, blindness, and nausea. Then your mind starts inventing things — shadows, footsteps, eyes in the dark. At rock bottom, you hear warden sounds, take wither damage, and the constant dark makes it nearly impossible to function. The only way out is to find light, warmth, and safety.

The 5 Sanity States

CALM 75 – 100%
You feel safe and focused. No penalties. This is where you want to stay.
No effects No whispers No hallucinations
ANXIOUS 50 – 74%
Something feels wrong. Minor effects begin. Whispers start appearing.

You are losing control. Movement and vision are affected. Shadows seem to move.

All drain and restore rates are multiplied by the Difficulty setting. On Easy, drain is halved and restore is boosted. On Hard, drain is 1.5x and restore is reduced to 0.7x.

As sanity drops below 75%, your character begins to experience psychological events:

Hallucination types chosen at random:

  • "You see a shadow moving..." — accompanied by cave ambient sound
  • "Something is behind you!" — accompanied by ghast scream at low volume
  • "The ground feels unstable..." — triggers a brief Nausea effect
  • "You hear footsteps approaching..." — accompanied by heartbeat sound
  • "EYES IN THE DARKNESS!" — triggers Blindness + elder guardian curse sound

Live Action Bar HUD

While HUD is enabled, the action bar shows your current sanity status in real time:

The + indicator means sanity is currently increasing. The - means it is decreasing. Light level (Bright/Dim/Dark) and nearby mob count are shown to help you react immediately.

How To Install

  • Download Sanity_System.mcpack using the button below.
  • Tap it (mobile) or double-click it (PC) — Minecraft imports it automatically.
  • Open your world settings → Experiments → enable Beta APIs.
  • Go to Behavior Packs and activate RR Sanity System.
  • Enter the world. The welcome message appears with all mechanics explained. Open the menu with Book + Sneak anytime!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My sanity is draining fast even with torches — why?
Torches and other light sources only help if they are actually raising the light level of the blocks around you. In a dark cave, you need to place torches nearby — simply holding one gives a small bonus but not as much as having placed light sources around you. Also check if there are hostile mobs nearby — even if you can't see them, mobs within 16 blocks are actively draining your sanity.
Q: The screen effects (darkness, nausea) are too intense — can I turn them off?
Yes. Open the menu with Book + Sneak → Settings → turn off Screen Effects. This disables all potion-effect-based screen distortions while keeping all other mechanics (sanity drain, whispers, HUD) active.
Q: How do I recover from Insane state quickly?
The fastest method is to eat an Enchanted Golden Apple (+50 sanity instantly). If you don't have one, stand next to a campfire (+3/tick) in a well-lit area. Getting near your tamed pets and standing on a bed also helps. On Easy difficulty, recovery is faster. Avoid all hostile mobs during recovery — even distant ones are draining you.
Q: Do the whisper messages affect other players?
No. Whispers are sent only to the player experiencing low sanity, via their personal message log. Other players in the world do not see them. The same applies to hallucination messages — they are fully per-player and private.
Q: Does sleeping in a bed help sanity?
Standing near a bed gives a passive sanity restore rate of +2/tick. The addon also detects proximity to beds as a comfort zone. However, the actual sleeping action does not give an instant sanity bonus in this version — respawning gives +50 and eating Enchanted Golden Apple gives +50 for emergencies.
Q: Does it work on multiplayer?
Yes. Every player tracks their own sanity independently. One player going insane does not affect others. Sanity, stats, and settings are all saved per-player via Dynamic Properties and persist across sessions.
Q: Can I play with Sanity on Hard difficulty?
On Hard difficulty, sanity drains 1.5x faster and restores at only 0.7x the normal rate. This makes exploring caves, the Nether, or fighting mobs significantly more challenging. It is recommended for experienced players looking for a true survival horror experience.
