What Is Mob Heads Drop?

Mob Heads Drop is a Minecraft Java Edition data pack that adds head drop loot tables to 63 mob types. Vanilla Minecraft only allows a handful of mobs to drop their heads — this pack extends that system to practically every mob in the game.

Each head uses a custom player head with a mob-accurate skin texture, so every head looks exactly like the mob it came from. They work as decorative blocks, make excellent display pieces for mob farms, and give survival players a new collection goal.

All 63 Supported Mobs

Drop Rates

All drops require the mob to be killed by a player. Arrow kills, trident kills, and direct melee kills all count. Environmental deaths (lava, fall, etc.) do not trigger head drops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Which Minecraft versions does this work with?
This data pack uses pack_format 26, which corresponds to Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.x. It will not work correctly on older versions. For 1.20.x you would need a pack with a lower format number.
Q: The mob died but no head dropped — why?
Head drops only trigger when the mob is killed directly by a player. If the mob dies from fall damage, fire, lava, suffocation, or any other environmental cause without a player landing the killing blow, the head drop will not trigger. Also remember that 10% means roughly 1 in 10 kills — you may need to kill several before one drops.
Q: Does Looting help?
Yes. Each level of Looting increases the drop chance by +5%. At Looting III, standard mobs have a 25% chance, Elder Guardian and Wither Skeleton have 30%, and the Warden has 35%.
Q: Do the heads look like the actual mobs?
Yes. Every head in this pack is a player head with a custom skin texture that accurately represents the mob's appearance. The Zombie head looks like a Zombie, the Blaze head looks like a Blaze, and so on. They can be placed as decoration blocks just like any other player head in Minecraft.
Q: Will this conflict with other data packs?
This pack modifies the entity loot tables inside data/minecraft/loot_tables/entities/. Any other data pack that also modifies the same mob loot tables will conflict — only one pack's loot table per mob will apply. It is compatible with packs that modify different mobs or different loot table types.
Q: Does it work on existing worlds?
Yes. Add the zip to the datapacks folder of any existing world, then run /reload in-game. The pack will be active immediately for all future mob kills. It does not affect already-existing items or structures.
Q: Does it work on servers and Realms?
Yes — for Minecraft Java servers, place the zip in the world's datapacks folder on the server. For Realms, upload the pack via the Realms settings panel under the world's data packs section. The heads will drop for all players on the server.
Q: Is this compatible with Bedrock Edition?
No. This is a Java Edition data pack. The file format, loot table system, and NBT tags are Java-specific and will not work in Bedrock Edition.
